Capt. Pat Dineen has a different approach to wreck fishing than most captains. He operates a 24-foot Skeeter bay boat with a Minn Kota Riptide SP 36-volt i-Pilot, a 112-pound-thrust trolling motor. With a GPS receiver built in, the i-Pilot keeps you on a fishing spot like an electronic anchor. Just choose your spot, and if you drift more than 5 feet away, i-Pilot will trigger your trolling motor to take you back automatically. "Traditional anchoring can be a commitment," he says. "With the i-Pilot, I can cover a lot of ground and don’t have to worry about setting, retrieving and resetting the anchor." Stealth is another benefit. "I can move in over a wreck or rock pile like a ninja," says Dineen. "The silence of the trolling motor and not having to drop a loud anchor and chain overboard have improved my fishing tenfold." Additionally, the trolling motor allows fast repositioning of the boat for finding different sections of a bottom structure.
The chainplates anchor the standing rigging and represent the other end of a load-bearing couplet. As with the mast step, the big concern is whether the structure remains intact or the tension has caused the laminate, wood bulkhead or metal webbing to deform. No matter how good the standing rigging happens to be, a chainplate or mast-step failure usually leads to a dismasting and major vessel damage.
You had me before and after the rails. That’s a place I hope to never return. Good luck and God speed.
While the Mega Yacht is certainly an exercise in very over-the-top design, it is also part of a long history of creating astronomical complications at Ulysse Nardin. The company’s best-known complicated watches, other than the many variations on the Freak, include the Trilogy Of Time collection. The Trilogy watches were first released between 1985 and 1992 and include a tellurium, astrolabe, and planetarium watch (which as far as I can recall were all firsts for watchmaking) and more recently, the Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck, which originally debuted in 2009, combined a tellurium with tide and orbiting moonphase indications in a unique fashion.
Sounds managable and easy enough to try and learn myself its amazing to me that nobody has ever found another bait to work as well as the gulp does considering the huge amounts of protoype stuff on the market to try out. Now to decide what rods im okay taking into the salt I’ve gone full baitcasting in the last few years but not sure I want to expose their beautiful inners to the saltwater so ill have to dig out some spinning gear from the past. I’m sure I’ll find an unmarked crabpot with my luck. You just use plain jig heads for the jigs right no skirts or flair stuff like a bucktail I think I have a bunch from my flounder days on the OBX I can use.
I’ve heard the same. Are there any good trout streams/rivers that are stocked and fish-able this deep into summer?
Mooring compensators are basically manufactured from high quality ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber in order to provide excellent strength along with the weather and salt water resistance. Mooring compensators are available in various sizes in the market and are utilized depending on their application. Mooring compensators are the most essential accessory for mooring lines. Basically, there are 2 types of mooring compensators available in the market, first that is threaded onto a rope and another not to be threaded on a rope. Some of the compensators are also available based on metal, but they are heavy, noisy and impractical and hence they are not utilized as a boat equipment. Further, in various harbors, metal springs are banned, thus mooring compensators are gaining importance in the market.
An article by Defense One uncovers a startling backlog of deferred maintenance of military infrastructure that extends to 2047! This is due to chronic underfunding since 2012. It’s hard to believe the Department of Defense has a problem funding anything; its nearly $1 trillion allowance is the largest item in the federal budget behind Social Security. The DoD’s base budget for 2019-20 is $576 billion.
Rare earths, manganese and vanadium are three examples of critical metals needed for the massive infrastructure build-out the US is talking about, in that $2 trillion bill it’s talking about passing. America doesn’t mine any of them. (we can’t really count the Mountain Pass rare earths mine in California because the concentrates are shipped to China for refining into oxides)
Of course, not everybody pulls their rig on a regular basis and has the opportunity to inspect the mast when nestled on stands. But there’s plenty you can observe when sailing. During a race to Bermuda with the late Rod Stephens, the brother of Olin and one of the driving forces of Sparkman & Stephens, I learned why a cruiser at sea should do a daily “rigging walk around.” Rod’s morning rig check involved a slow amble forward on the windward deck glancing up and down to make sure toggles, clevis pins, and other bits and pieces were all in place, and none of the running rigging had been led incorrectly in the dark. Returning aft on the leeward side, he looked over the gooseneck fitting and glanced aloft at the spreaders, noting mast bend and the fall off to leeward that the spar had to endure.
The ridiculous cobia boat bite is slowing down a bit. Piers will have spanish on the end with gotcha plugs on easterly wind days. Sea Mullet and puppy drum in the surf. Offshore has dolphin and tuna.
