I have a 7 foot HMG maybe 5 years old (burgundy colored glossy blank). The new ones are a different blank; lighter wt with a matte finish, and there is less cork ahead of the reel. Result is not only lighter weight but better balance as well. Action seems to be the same. Why shorter? For me the difference in casting distance is nominal and I feel like I gain control which is more important to me hitting small targets around oyster bars in creeks. It’s also a little easier to submarine the delivery up under docks/piers.

Edit most reviews on nucanoes are typical it’s big and in a breeze can be sluggish or like a sail and I saw one saying the quality is cheaper than a Jackson but I only saw one salty review out of them all. Thrusters assist the natural vessel weathervaning and maintain the vessel so that wind incidence is approximately 15º from portside to enhance ventilation. In storms this requirement can be waived. The use of thrusters reduces forces introduced by wave, wind, and current on the vessel compared to the free weathervaning. Although five thruster units are provided under the hull for heading control, the mooring analyses assume only four are available at any time. Furthermore, the “stand-by” thruster is conservatively assumed to be the most onerous one i.e. that with the largest restoring yaw moment. When considering the “black ship” condition, all five thrusters are not functioning and the station-keeping of the Skarv FPSO becomes fully passive.
